There are ample of references to knowledge and the pursuit of knowledge in the Holy Quran. The general feeling it leave the reader with is that the possessor of knowledge or wisdom has been given a very influential gift, and that the hunt of knowledge is something which must be done actively by everyone because knowledge is wisdom.
Verse 96:1-5 of Holy Quran
Recite in the name of your Lord who created – Created man from a clinging substance. Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous – Who taught by the pen – Taught man that which he knew not.
These five verses make up the primary passage revealed from the Holy Quran to mankind through the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Verse 2:269 of Holy Quran,
He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.
Verse 41:53 of Holy Quran,
We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?
Though, almost every verse in the Holy Quran carries a universal and a historical meaning, and thus one possible interpretation of this verse (ayat) is that it refers to the slow discovery of greater and greater natural “evidence” in world. Two of the most significant and most fascinating goals of modern science are to gaze farther and farther out to the edge of the earth, and to look deeper and deeper into the formation of the human body.
Verse 58:11 of Holy Quran,
O you who have believed, when you are told, “Space yourselves” in assemblies, then make space; ALLAH will make space for you. And when you are told, “Arise,” then arise; ALLAH will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And ALLAH is Acquainted with what you do.
The initial source of Islam is the Holy Quran and we have seen some verses above on the topic of knowledge. The second source is the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). There are also references in the Holy Quran describing the value of a knowledgeable person as compare to an ignorant person. They both are not equal.
Verse 39:9 of Holy Quran,
Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]? Say, “Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
